The average person can easily go 9 hours without eating. For those that have blood sugar problems and need to eat, they should be bringing their own snacks. I would never rely on the airline to provide me with food if I absolutely had to have it. On long flights I even buy a bottle of water and bring on board. Again, I don't rely on the airline. And I have my laptop and phone incase I feel the need for entertainment and UA doesn't have any or I'm not interested in what they have.
Yes, of course average person can go 9 hours without eating. But that's what most people would've already done during the night!! Add another 9 hours to that, it makes almost approaching 18 hours!!
As I said that situation could've been easily avoided by allowing people to go out and have another 30 minutes of delay, rather than have them starving, angry and grumbling. ORD is a huge airport, and eateries there could easily handle another 150 people coming out at once and grabbing a quick bite to eat. Heck, buses with 50 people do that routinely - and with just 20 minutes of stop in a refreshment area on a long haul route.
