Congrats. And that's one idea you mentioned- book OW on UA and wait until you earn enough miles to book the return. Or book OW on united in biz (assuming you have enough miles- not sure what UA charges) and sign up for a couple cc's to get your return (perhaps on AA if they have good enough promos). And remember you can book on partner carriers- AA partners with QF and CX via HKG, (AS does too) and UA with NZ (and other partners via Asia) - stopover in HI may be more of a challenge but hopefully something turns up.
