I know this thread is mostly about boarding passes, but is anyone ever asked for photo ID as well? At the duty free shop at LGW they insist (and do actually insist when I challenged it) on seeing photo ID - for 'security reasons' according to the guy who served me. Apparently they started with this requirement about a year ago. But not sure the guy really knew the reasons - just what he had been taught.
It is not actually scanned, so I guess no data is stored, so no issues with data usage, but I do not understand why it is needed.
I provided it in the end, as I had promised the wife some Bollinger Rose!

After a great deal of digging I learnt that it was to further verify that the boarding pass presented belonged to the passenger.
Policies are institutional scar tissue.
