$300 well spent, if everything fails you will have a better seat than in the back. As for upgrade opportunity, it's a gamble.
I often buy WT+ and have a 90% success rate upgrading with avios. A few years ago it was much easier, today award seats can open up anytime up to the departure date. Also, remember that even if you can't upgrade with avios, there can be cash offers at the airport.
