3 - yes, you can do that subject to availibility (but you have to book it as stopover and not connection - go back 50 or so posts back to see rules)
4 - Optimization will be constrained by availibility and you being close to 25k marker. If JMB-CPT flights are not bookable on this award, you can buy those separately using discount carriers and free up sopme miles which will allow for return through DUS or TXL for Air Berlin or DOH for QR or AMM for RJ or possibly HEL for AY and thus avoid YQ on IB.

desi for the response. Seems like the biggest consideration for me is to make sure that I do #3 correctly and have NYC be a stop toward the end. Related to the YQ on IB, do you (or anyone else) have a good idea of what the order of magnitude would be? I saw on another thread that the max that AA collects is 30 euros per segment, but would be interested if that is correct and still applies. My understanding is that it is still much lower than BA.

Regarding the Comair segments, keep in mind that they will add a substantial amount of YQ to your total cost. The last time we travelled to South Africa - a few months ago - we decided to avoid BA/Comair and use SA, which allowed much more flexibility (many more flights availble for purchase). The difference in cost between BA YQ and a revenue ticket on SA between CPT and JNB was less than $30, and it could be even lower if you fly one of the local LCCs. Business class for a two-hour segment is not crucial for us, and economy on SA was quite acceptable.
Disappointing to hear this. J is not necessary for us either, but will probably still do it if the difference in price is negligible and we have the miles in the OW award. We'll probably use Avios for any other intra-RSA segments that Comair flies, and maybe here as well if the math makes sense.
