Demographics say there are a lot of people nearing retirement age. They don't say that they a) will retire, b) have huge balances of miles, c) will use the huge balance of miles for flights.
I'd say the far bigger issue is how few low cost awards there are, not how many miles people have banked for long times that they will now want to use. Many people use these miles as they go.
