The laptop may not be worth much, but the information on the hard drive could be worth a fortune to a thief. She needs to get something she can carry on. A 17" is a desktop replacement.... At least have her run bitlocker (Win 7+) and/or truecrypt and utilize strong passwords. If she is running XP then look at enrypting the whole HDD.
