Well just as an update.....

As I said, LHR-SIN return cost me 59.75 with BA and they wanted ~£400 for the SIN-PER return.

After calls back and forth to BA and Qantas I eventually got Qantas to issue me an infant only ticket for the same flights for 80AUD - around £45.
