Terminal transfers usually mean change of airline and often require a luggage collection and change of course, yet I think there are some airline combinations that do interline automatically at PEK from 2 to 3 and vv. I guess more to the point, I'm trying to compare apples to apples: this poster's all-MU transit sequence with PEK's all-CA or CAN's all-CZ sequences. Which of course don't require terminal changes and do autotransfer unless a true stopover is scheduled rather than a connection.
I think the main issue beyond annoyance with the PVG transits is that some people aren't fully apprised beforehand of the process and are booking tickets without enough practical connection time, even if the MCT makes it seem like a kosher booking.
