Short layover in Shanghai?

Hi guys,

I've got a 5 hour layover coming up at PVG in early March.

1. All the travel is on one itinerary-- HKG-PVG-LAX. Cathay Pacific from HKG-PVG and American Airlines from PVG-LAX. Would I be safe in assuming our bags would be checked through from HKG all the way to LAX, and that we would only have to worry about going through customs/immigration with our carryons?

2. I would also assume we would be issued our PVG-LAX boarding pass in HKG. We are flying First, so I would also assume that, were we to leave the airport, upon our return we could go through an expedited security line?

3. If the above assumptions are true -- is it possible for a whirlwind visit to Nanking Rd., the Bund, or somewhere else iconic in central Shanghai? Not as a "let's try to see the whole city in one fell swoop" kind of itinerary, but as a, well, we have a few hours -- it'd be very cool to grab a drink with a view and maybe stroll the Bund for a little while.

If PVG is truly a nightmare, and if through-transit would require re-checking-in for our AA flight or collecting and then re-checking our luggage, I think we'd just camp out in a premium lounge. But if there's a real chance of getting to see Shanghai even for a brief moment - I would want to jump on it, assuming it isn't a backbreaking endeavor with a real risk of me missing the flight.

Thanks in advance for thoughts!
