My issue is not so much that the upgrade didn't clear. When I boarded the flight, coach was indeed fairly light and I was sitting in an aisle seat 25H with a passenger in the adjacent 25J window seat. My problem is that the Admirals Club agent didn't go a bit out of her way to offer me an alternative seat where the adjacent seat was empty. I remember a time when the agent would suggest blocking the adjacent seat.
Should I have specifically requested this ?
I almost always have the AAngels in the SCL AC offer me alternative seats on my flights when an upgrade doesn't clear (or even if I just ask regardless of upgrade) - up to and including having a row to myself so I can lay down across three seats. I don't think it's necessarily "policy," but rather dependent upon the person him/herself.
