Seeking advice re: Check thru baggage

Hi all,

I have a cheap ex-EU trip coming up, where we fly LGW-AMS and then AMS-LHR-DXB, all with BA. The two itineraries are separate tickets, however we have allowed three hours to connect in AMS.

We will have bags to check, so is it worth asking at LGW to have the bags through checked to DXB (and will they do so?) or are we better off collecting the bags and re-checking in at AMS for the onward?

I fully expect there may be a raised eyebrow if we request to through check the bags at LGW, but I'm just wondering if there's any particular reason not through check on such an itinerary? Is it also worth calling BA to at least put a note about the onward booking in the first booking so that the agent at LGW can see what's going on?

Thanks in advance.
