Not a bad idea, but I'd advise OP to repackage the shipping box so that cushioning material fully surrounds the manufacturer's box. Amazon typically double-boxes by putting the manufacturer's box in one corner of the shipping box and then just putting air cushions to fill the space. I would certainly not consider checking in the manufacturer's box.
