I'm not sure what you mean by an SSD being a "major purchase." If you shop carefully on-line in the US, you can find 500 gb SSDs for well under $400. I've bought two -- one for a desktop and one for a laptop. They're OCZ Agility 4 drives, and have been absolutely reliable, as well as blazingly fast.
