Luggage more likely to get lost checked-through with 24 hr layover?

Hi,

We're flying PIT-IAD-BRU, stopping over for about 22 hours, and then flying BRU-BCN. I've searched on FT and I've seen reports that it's hit-and-miss about whether we can get our bags checked straight through to BCN. But, if we can, should I be concerned that the bags are more likely to get lost?

There are lockers at BRU, so we could just collect them there and pay 7 Euros to store them 'til we return.

I'd probably feel better seeing my bags in BRU, but is it necessary? I'm having visions of the bags heading to BCN the same day and sitting unattended in a bag claim area somewhere, lol. Will the bags be ok going straight through without us? Any experiences?

Oh, if it matters, PIT-IAD is on UA, so I'll be checking in with them; then the rest is on Brussels Air.

Thanks!
