It helps to know because sometimes on award travel, the issuing airline may book your award ticket on its partner metal under a revenue code (such as M), rather than an award code, which will then earn you miles on the program of your choice. It's happened to me, and it was a pleasant surprise.

So rules are rules. Credit is usually given based on fare code alone, so it's worth knowing what your ticket says.
