Various guides have told me that I´d be dead within 6h max. if I walked around any of the game reserves or parks by myself.

I think there´s definitely some truth to it. There´s even the occasional killing of people in an open landlover, though it apparently depends on the region (and whether the animals have figured out that the people and vehicle aren´t one giant enemy) and how the people inside the vehicle behave.
