Is it worth it to look for these type fares? And is there a difference in these fares and, say, the typical lowest class fares that I buy, other than the higher chance for upgrades?
Buying a Y fare would put you higher on chance for upgrade but is very expensive (as previously said, likely more expensive than a first class ticket). You will be on top of all Medallion on non Y fares, and behind DM and PM on Y fares. If upgrade space is available at time of booking, you can get the upgrade to clear right away.

If you buy below Y, you will be on the upgrade list based on your medallion status and based on your fare (that's if you are looking at a complementary upgrade). Your chances will therefore depend on 1. how many seats are available, 2. how many DM and PM are on the same flight and 3. how many GM are on the same flight with a higher fare. You may clear at your window (day 3) or at the gate.

If miles upgrade space is available at time of booking (check using expert flyer), you can buy K or higher and use miles to upgrade right away.
