That seems quite a ridiculous and over the top way of an effort to avoid pissing off mainland China. How many other global flag carriers fly into TPE now? It's not a small number and most of their countries also have relations with mainland China. I guess Russia missed the memo that even Taiwan and PRC have direct flights these days and the pissing match has mostly diminished.
