Do you have any experience doing this at all?!?

Not for free -- you still have to pay for a NJT ticket ($8.25) but you may be able to avoid a conductor since it is a short hop (no guarantees though and they are fast during non-peak times).

What maybe possible is to purchase a Metropark to Newark ticket ($6.00) and use your amtrak ticket to hop the gate -OR- even an Elizabeth to Newark ticket ($2.75). You just have to change the origin on the NJT kiosk to purchase those tickets. However, keep in mind that not all NJT trains stop in Elizabeth/Metropark so the conductor may be slightly confused but shouldn't cause too much of an issue.
