I came through the SFO GE lane, same secondary verification by a rude officer that would not answer why this new procedure was in effect, no reply, no acknowledgement of my question, just an evil stare. The GE machines were about 30% out of order, long line to use them, and the secondary inspection line for the immigration officer was quite long as the officer was also working on non-golbal entry matters. My colleagues without GE actually were processed much quicker and had to wait for me in the arrivals hall.

For sure another bungled mess!
