Plane leaving without checked-in passenger before departure time

Hello Flyertalk.

I would like to get your thoughts on a very strange experience I had a while back. The matter has been settled and my intentions are merely to get more experienced travelers' thought so that I can better act in the future, if similar experience happens.

About a year ago, I arrived at the airport to learn that the flight was delayed for an hour. I had checked-in earlier via mobile phone and so I headed to Sky Club while I waited for the new boarding time.

Precisely 30 minutes prior to the new departure time, I arrived at the gate, only to see the plane being pushed back. During the whole time, there was absolutely no announcement whatsoever at the lounge. Furthermore, all the screens sky club, airport and even the message board at the gate still showed the delayed departure time.

When I showed my dismay to the gate agent, he just told me that he had made numerous announcement at the gate. Then, he hurried himself to erase the departure time that was still displaying behind him.

He then simply proceeded to issue me a new boarding pass for the next flight. At the time I had a paid First Class ticket. But the agent told me that the first class was full and that I would have to fly Economy, which I did since I had no other choice.

What made me even angrier was that he wasn't apologetic at all during the whole situation. Furthermore, I found out once on board that most of Economy Comfort seats were empty but he couldn't even bother to give me one.

After days and days of going back and forth with the customer center, the bottom line is that I got a refund for this flight. (one way portion of a RT ticket). Was it an appropriate response from Delta or should I have pursued the matter further?
