I personally found it really sped up boarding on an early LHR-GLA flight last week but there the CSD was hanging coats, saying hello to people and generally keeping busy. I imagine if they just stand at the door staring vacantly into the middle distance.
How about keeping the check in place but now that they're not required to check flight info they use it to give a personal welcome to everybody?
