I brought it up. My point was about the median $/mile in the US, not the total fare to the airport!

The median (average) in the US seems to be slightly above $2/mile. Tokyo is ~$5/mile. I said "nearly 3X the milage rate"; actually it's around 2.5X at 100 yen to the USD.

Seems like you were not moving for nearly an hour of a traffic (waiting time is around $24/hour) or maybe the driver took a detour via the Beltway to 395 or something ridiculous if the meter showed $80 to DC. To the West End (Park Hyatt and many other hotels) it's 26 miles X $2 plus the meter drop and extra passenger fee. The meter read less than $60 last time I took this ride a few months ago.

p.s. At $2.50/mile both NYC and Minneapolis are half of Tokyo.

A few folks have brought up Washington Flyer and IAD as "average" for the U.S., but IAD is also pretty darn far from the downtown area. My last fare from IAD to destination near D.C. downtown was over $80 (before tip), and there are not really public transport options to even consider.
