Unhappy British Airways - Sustainable?

Hi,
A friend suggested I write on this website after my experience with BA.
All the customer service people were so lovely, but the logic behind my problem is very confusing.

I booked a flight home to Ireland for Christmas from Vancouver BC, flying through London each way. It turns out that now I will actually be in England for family reasons before my flight back, so I called them up to cancel my Dublin - London flight.

I was so shocked when they told me that there would be a fee of $550 to NOT go on the Dublin flight, due to taxes in London and also the change and admin fee. I told them I'd call back, and after discussing it at length with my boyfriend abotu how we could finance this and decided that we would do it.

I called back to make the big payment and the price has now risen to $980 - all NOT to take a flight. The customer service rep was so nice and totally understood that it didn't make sense.
So British Airways are asking me to fly back to Dublin from London, to fly back to London a few hours later.

They seem to pride themselves on sustainability and being environmentally friendly and even have a huge marketing campaign 'One Destination', not to be confused with One Direction...

This is a quote from their website:
At British Airways we are committed to addressing our environmental responsibilities. While the air transport services we provide are vital to the social and economic welfare of the UK and the countries we serve, they also have an impact on the environment. By doing all we can to minimise these impacts, we aim to set the standard in responsible aviation.

So, instead of me NOT taking a flight, they want me to take an extra flight, not to mention the taxis and cars needed to get me to and from the airport....

I'm really surprised with this, and quite disappointed. I honestly thought it would be no problem to just not take my Dublin flight and just join the other people on the London flight.

What do you think?
