I can't speak to your question, but why would you do the challenge? I can see some benefit to having ows status as you start your travels around the region, for lounges and such. But if you credit that leg to AA, you're "losing" about 10,000 club miles that already get you one-third of the way to SL or (if you get a status match from CX before your departure) one-sixth of the way to GO. If your ultimate goal is to build MPO status, I'd credit this trip to AM/MPO even if it means roughing it without lounge access for a few intra-Asia trips after you land in HKG.
Although I'm not sure you answered the question about whether your regional travel will be Y or J? Depending on the answer, you could end up crediting everything to AA anyway.
