Thank you both for the input. Interestingly enough, I was only in Zone 3. What I suppose I could have tried, and did not, was politely insisting that I have the opportunity to attempt to fit my bag in the overhead, with the understanding that I would check it if it did not fit.
Most GA won't allow this. Once the "computer" tells them (or the FA on the flight tells them) to start checking bags, they'll start checking bags that cannot fit under the seat in front of you. They won't allow you to board with a rollaboard then.
