Was the gate agent mistaken? Should I more politely have pushed the issue? It didn't make a lot of sense to me that if the plane did not have overheads large enough to accommodate regulation size carryons, that a "yellow tag" gate check would not be offered.
Roller boards will fit sideways in the coach bins, if you were in zone 4 or 5 the computer was probably predicting that the overheads were full and instructing the agent to begin checking bags. Sometimes the agents won't budge even if there is plenty room when the computer tells them to start checking.
