I had such case last week, flying JFK-SEA. Upgrade request was made over the phone (Delta messed up my ticket really badly and took advantage of that by immediately selling my confirmed J seat effectively forcing me into Y as next flights were to arrive 7+ hours later) and confirmed by checking my DL app (showed Upgrade Requested). I could not check in until the airport though (neither through the site, nor the app, not even DL phone agent), but had no problems checking in with an agent there. After that I checked DL app and did not see my name. At the gate the two agents were looking really confused when I asked them about my position in the upgrade list (obviously, not finding me there) and instead of answering said there were Diamonds ahead of me anyways.
Are you DM or PM? If PM, the answer about DMs on top could have just been a way to get rid of you quickly without looking at the situation.

In the end did you pay for coach or business class?
