If they lived together for 10 years there may be another problem. Lots of states have what is called common law marriage. If you live together for a certain period of time you are basically considered married and any miles she earned while in that time could legally be half his. You may want to check this out. I remember some celebrity many years ago got sued to pay alimony and a settlement when the other party claimed common law marriage, California is not a common law marriage state so got tossed in court. Lee Marvin was the actor. I know the wiki states both sides must consent but if there is no paper who is to say if both sides consented or not. It's he said/she said. And if they shared bank accounts, etc makes it even more difficult.
