The late/early flight is very popular because it maximises time at the destination. I always take the late flight out and late flight back from DXB or AUH as it helps to stretch out a long weekend and allows work on the day of departure and arrival.
Perhaps that makes sense. DXB was just a transit point for us so the 2am meant a loooooong time between arrival and departure without anything meaningful to do. I guess when you've spent a few days there already you could make it work.
