It would surely make sense the other way around? The side-wall lights off, so the passenger in the window can see out clearly (or snooze), and the aisle lights on dim which gives more light for the crew working in the cabin without being in anyone's face.

I actually asked the CSD to do it that way around on an Athens flight, and it seemed much better.

Yes, I see what you are saying.

I personally have the lighting very low when it is dark outside because it is very harsh otherwise. If the lights are off for takeoff then just putting them on a low setting seems bright enough when your eyes are used to the dark and it definitely produces much more relaxed passengers! I do use the sidewall lights though because it generally gives a gentler effect than the ceiling ones.
