I've been a huge FT fan since 2000, and this is my inaugural post. Thanks to all the members who have made this a mecca for road warriors.
I've been a frequent traveller for several years now, racking up more than $500K in Amex charges for personal and business expenses, mostly internationally. I've probably charged another $100K with Visa/Mastercard, but I've tried to remain loyal to SPG since college, and have been duly rewarded by Lifetime Gold and Platinum/Ambassador status. I'm blessed that my FICO score is above 800. In other words, I'm as loyal and high-spending a customer as you can get.
While I'm a huge fan of Amex for their fantastic customer service and great website, I'm really/really tired of paying the 2.7% foreign transaction fee. It's just ludicrous when other cards from credit unions, Capital One, or Chase are offering no foreign transaction fees with a small annual fee, or none at all. So, after calling Amex and requesting that they waive the foreign transaction fees for my high spending and getting denied, I'm done with American Express. I've just signed up for a Chase United card and charged $20K in the first week. I'll keep the card for my rare domestic spending, but it's going from the front of my wallet to the back.
Join me, fellow FTers!
