Not sure why you did this. My wife and I often originate in two different cities and connect on the second leg. You choose your seats, making sure there is a vacant one next to you, then choose her seats. Not necessary to have two different tickets for you unless it's cheaper, which it rarely is, particularly connecting through ATL!
