Thanks for the tip on using AA within So. America. I'll have to figure out how to get from MDZ to FTE on one ticket since they seem to go through different airports. Anyway, it's still fewer miles than how I was structuring it.

This couldn't be more complicated! Too bad none of the airlines can book on partners easily!
In general, using Avios within S. America is going to be the right move. I was able to book some LAN flights from the BA website last year (for example, LIM-CUZ), but others proved more challenging and I had to call (CUZ-PEM, PEM-LIM). The problem was generally that the website didn't recognize the airport codes, but it did show accurate inventory - typically wide open - when the codes were recognized. Anyway, the BA rep waived the ticketing charge when I told them I couldn't do it on the website.
