You need to look at:
- Which programs you can convert those points to
- How many points you require for typical routes you want to travel on
- Availability for those routes, is it realistic
- Additional cost for those routes
- Differences between the programs, change fees, flexibility, advanced booking requirements, etc
AAdvantage and BAEC are different programs, with different points/miles requirements, zonal vs segment based among other things. They are both oneworld partners, so you can book AA with BA avios and BA with AA miles, but both also have different non-oneworld partners you can use (eg EI for BA and HA for AA).
