I remember some F/As told me that the meal times have to do with rest time of the crews too. So after the first meal is served, the first set of crews go to rest, and then midflight - they serve dinner, and then the second set of crews go to rest. I honestly think it is stupid to turn on the lights in the middle of the flight just to serve a meal. Korean Air adopts a similar style, but other than KE, I don't think any airline does it.
I sort of wish CX will go back to the old style... first meal after takeoff and second main meal prior to landing. If pax are hungry there are noodles. However, I have heard that CX has cut back on the loading of noodle cups.
IMHO, CX might think that they can serve less mid-flight snacks if they serve the main meal mid-flight.
Anyway, it is bad, and CX management should go back to the old format.
