Start with the TATL portion of the trip. You can try going to the wikipedia pages for the airports in Europe you'd like to fly into (I'd check FRA also) and seeing which star alliance airlines have direct flights from those cities to airports in the US you can connect to (ORD, IAD, EWR). Then use united.com to check availability between the 2 cities.
