I have never once called in to manually clear a GPU. I just trust the system and play the lottery like most people. I am way too busy to check for R-space every hour in the days prior to my flight just so I can "jump the queue" That being said, I am 23/24 for GPUs and around 90% for CPUs these last 3 years. So the system has worked for me. And no, I don't buy Y/B fares. I buy the cheapest upgradeable fare at the time of booking, usually W. Hell, I have even been bumped to F internationally a couple of times in the last year---the elusive "double upgrade" FTers whisper about. But those two times that I got F, I did check-in at the very last minute (literally at the 45 min cutoff), so maybe I was guilty of gaming the system by doing that???

However, sniping an upgrade seat from another flyer is not legally, morally, or ethically equivalent to premeditated attempted fraud by trying to acquire an award ticket for ZERO miles through manipulation (not "hacking") of the website. Those who are saying that they did it accidentally are just being disingenuous.
