So the system has worked for me. And no, I don't buy Y/B fares. I buy the cheapest upgradeable fare at the time of booking, usually W. Hell, I have even been bumped to F internationally a couple of times in the last year---the elusive "double upgrade" FTers whisper about. But those two times that I got F, I did check-in at the very last minute (literally at the 45 min cutoff), so maybe I was guilty of gaming the system by doing that???
However, sniping an upgrade seat from another flyer is not legally, morally, or ethically equivalent to premeditated attempted fraud by trying to acquire an award ticket for ZERO miles through manipulation (not "hacking") of the website. Those who are saying that they did it accidentally are just being disingenuous.
Absolutely agree with you. They're not in the same league. Sniping an upgrade seat is equivalent to jumping a box office que and getting the last good seat at popular broadway show, manipulating the system to get a ticket for nothing is equivalent to sneaking in the back door of the theater at an unguarded moment to see the show. One is bad manners and being an entitled pig, the other is committing a misdemeanor.
