Nearly denied boarding on a BA flight to Italy because of passport expiry!

My passport is due to expire in January 2014, I have travelled a fair bit over the summer so didn't really have time to renew it. I was flying to Italy for a weekend break and checked both on the BA website and with the Foreign Office website about minimum passport validity requirements for Italy. For UK passport holders there are none, so I thought no more of it. Imagine my surprise when at 7.45am last Friday the man at the BA check in desk looked at his screen and flatly said "you have less than 3 months left on your passport, you won't be allowed through Italian immigration, you cannot fly today!'. I explained I had checked beforehand and he was unmoved. I insisted again (and I think a third time as well), then I said "can you get a supervisor?". He seemed unimpressed but reluctantly picked up the phone. He said "it may be our information has not been updated" and of course that was the case! EU citizens do not need minimum passport validity beyond their date of stay. I said "well you should have the right information and you haven't even apologised". He just said "well, I did say our information might not have been updated". Of course, he only said this after I'd challenged him a few times. Had I not been sure I'd checked, I would have been turned away!

The same scenario apparently happened to a man trying to fly to Cyprus on Easyjet in June 2013 and he was denied boarding. Easyjet compensated him later.

I have complained to BA and be warned BA may have wrong passport requirement information on their check in computers!
