The first option, ringing up BAEC, is probably best, and is often effective. You may have to wait until closer to departure though. If you have Gold status then a lot of extra domestic availability becomes open to you, almost to the extent that it is by exception that a service is not open to Avios availability. The second option won't work. Or if it did it would be a case of cancelling the short haul and amending the longhaul sectors.

Separate trips is an option, particularly if you wanted to spend the night in LHR before a longhaul (more relevant for Middle East and the early East Coast North American flights). The hand luggage only fares are something of a bargain too, so don't forget to look at the cash fare.
