Can a phone call to BAEC open up availability on a short haul when booked in conjunction with a long haul reward? Alternatively, can the short haul be added to the same booking at a later date? I would be loathed to book as two separate trips due to the probability of missed connections.
The first option, ringing up BAEC, is probably best, and is often effective. You may have to wait until closer to departure though. If you have Gold status then a lot of extra domestic availability becomes open to you, almost to the extent that it is by exception that a service is not open to Avios availability. The second option won't work. Or if it did it would be a case of cancelling the short haul and amending the longhaul sectors.
Separate trips is an option, particularly if you wanted to spend the night in LHR before a longhaul (more relevant for Middle East and the early East Coast North American flights). The hand luggage only fares are something of a bargain too, so don't forget to look at the cash fare.
