Domestic availability works off short time frames than longhaul, which causes difficulties to those (unlike me!) who can sort their lives out months and months in advance.
I had been looking a year out at long haul availability and I had assumed that the difference between MAN and LHR departures was down to limited availability and enforced minimum connection times. Your answer above is yet one more reminder why I should stop making assumptions.

Can a phone call to BAEC open up availability on a short haul when booked in conjunction with a long haul reward? Alternatively, can the short haul be added to the same booking at a later date? I would be loathed to book as two separate trips due to the probability of missed connections.

The recent arrival of Qatar into the One World family does seem to offer a lot of possibilities for those heading east for whom MAN is closer than LHR. There is at least one flight a day with a second flight operating three times a week.

Finally, I had no idea of Billund's existence. It looks like the kids have just secured themselves a trip to Legoland.
