You need seperate accounts. Some ffp's allow for family tranfers. Most ffp's allow some one else to use your miles (all subject to t&c's)

What other flights may you do in the future ?
Which airline or the airline with the cheapest flights ?

Freq flyer program's are for the long term. Not just 1 trip. But AA is good for infrequent flying. But as with all ffp's be carefull about expiring miles due to no activity (often 18 months)
