They wouldn't cancel it because of lack of ticket sales per-se...but I have been on many AA flights from LGA-ORD that have been cancelled for "mechanical reasons," but miraculously everyone is accommodated on the next flight that leaves in an 1 hr.

I've had my suspicions, but you'll never know
