The other issue (speaking generically here, not necessarily in relation to SIN - I have no idea what happens there) is that some countries charge different taxes depending on whether you are transitting or originating (the UK is particularly bad in this regard) - stopping for over a certain period might increase government charges (again though, not sure if this is an issue with SIN, but something worth looking at).
