I have not had any issues with connecting through LHR, although it can be time consuming to wait for a bus to another terminal, and to clear security when changing terminals. Unlike most international connections through the US, you will not have to clear Immigration in UK and you will not have to pick you your bag. I don't see any difference whether the transfer is BA or AA, although that might affect the terminal used. My last BA to BA ( TLV-LHR-LAS) transfer was Sept 6. My last AA to BA (RDU-LHR-AMM) transfer was October 10.
