Among the better options in the area include db Bistro Moderne (French), Sushi Zen (Japanese), Aureole (French), Marseille (French), Five Napkin Burger (burgers) and (for those with a big wallet) Hakkasan (Chinese). None is actually in Times Square, but all are within close proximity.
The highligted are the key words. However, I wouldn't say to someone there aren't decent restaurants in close proximity.
I just find on Times Square there are tacky chains that can be found in any city. Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Bubba Gump, etc., etc., etc.
