There's obvious reasons why you want to visit and see the sights in big cities, but perhaps you can try to limit your big city sightseeing to weekdays (early mornings can be great for general walking, tourists, particularly those traveling in big groups on big buses, don't generally hit the streets really early).

On the weekends, definitely head for the smaller towns.
