Not necessary, I have a cousin misconnect UA SFO-HKG, UA put him on CX instead of SQ.
Lately, it happens more UA would rather put someone in hotel overnight and fly the next day on the same flight and hand out vouchers, guess it is much cheaper than paying a new ticket on another airline alliance or not.
I wonder if UA has something with CX because I've had a similar occurrence from SIN! I have no idea if all the SQ flights were full when it happened to me, but I doubt it given they have 7 wide bodies a day SIN-HKG and two of them are A380s (the other five are 777s)! UA's 747 went irops in HKG so it never made it to SIN the night before.
UA obviously cancelled the SIN-HKG flight the next morning but to my surprise they rebooked me on CX, not SQ.
