If you simply skip the first segment, the remainder of the itinerary will be cancelled. But, in IRROPS, you can ask UA to cancel the first segment (or any segment) and they will do so and simply permit the itinerary to commence xSFO.

I would be extremely surprised to see UA rebook on a non-*A carrier. LH yes. AF, highly unlikely.
